A cleaner mouth than brushing alone can reach

Daily brushing and flossing are your first line of defence, but professional cleaning is what reaches the areas a toothbrush can’t. Plaque that isn’t removed within about 48 hours mineralises into calculus — tartar — and no amount of brushing will shift it once it has hardened.

Under Dr. Matthew Le, a cleaning at Flossophy is a diagnostic appointment as much as a hygiene one. We chart your gums, photograph what we find and show you the screen, so you leave knowing exactly where you stand.

Why it matters

Cleaning is about more than stain

Two reasons we take your six-month visit seriously.

Preventing gum disease and tooth loss

Hardened tartar irritates the gums and leads to gingivitis. Left alone it can progress to periodontitis, which destroys the bone holding your teeth in place.

The oral-systemic connection

The American Dental Association recognises a link between oral health and systemic conditions including heart disease and diabetes. Gum disease can make blood sugar harder to control, and high blood sugar makes infection harder to fight.

Your cleaning

Three protocols, matched to your gums

What we do next depends on what the charting shows.

01

Prophylaxis

The standard cleaning, for healthy gum tissue with minimal bone loss. Ultrasonic scaling shatters tartar with high-frequency vibration and a cooling water mist, followed by precision hand scaling in delicate areas.

02

Gingivitis therapy

If we find inflammation, we focus on removing bacteria at the gumline to help reverse it before it becomes permanent.

03

Periodontal maintenance

For patients with a history of deep cleaning (scaling and root planing), these visits run every three months to stop bone loss returning.

Questions

Teeth cleaning FAQs

How often should adults have a cleaning and exam?

Most adults should schedule a cleaning and exam every six months. Some people need more frequent visits depending on their gum health — if you are on periodontal maintenance, that usually means every three months.

When should children start preventive visits?

Bring children in early and keep it routine. We use the cleaning as a teaching moment, showing children and parents together the best brushing angles and how diet affects enamel.

Does a cleaning hurt?

Rarely. We use ultrasonic scalers rather than aggressive hand scraping, and topical numbing is available if your teeth are sensitive.
