A dental bridge is a reliable, durable way to replace missing teeth. Unlike a removable partial denture, a bridge is fixed in place — it stays where it is put, and you clean around it rather than taking it out.
The idea is not new; ancient civilisations bridged gaps using animal and human teeth, bone, gold and ivory. Modern bridges are made from porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal and engineered ceramics, which is a considerable improvement.
The teeth on both sides of the gap are prepared and crowned to support the artificial teeth — known as pontics — between them. Like a bridge over water, resting on solid piers.
Similar to a traditional fixed bridge, but with the pontic supported by a crown on one side only. Used where there is a suitable tooth on just one side of the gap.
Anchored to dental implants rather than natural teeth. Often the best option, because it avoids preparing healthy neighbouring teeth and preserves the bone underneath.
Fixed bridges are created over multiple visits. We begin with a comprehensive diagnostic workup to develop the treatment plan, then prepare the abutment teeth that will carry the bridge and take impressions.
Some sensitivity and gum soreness after tooth preparation is normal and settles over time. Temporary restorations do not fit as precisely as the final one, so a little awareness of them is expected.
Please handle a temporary bridge carefully — it is not as durable as the permanent restoration. If it is damaged or comes loose, keep it and call the office so we can arrange a replacement.
Placing dental implants is a minor surgical procedure carried out on an outpatient basis. The extent depends on the number of implants needed and whether any additional procedures such as grafting are required.
We take detailed diagnostic records including 3D images of your jaws and teeth to ensure precise placement, and we keep you informed at each stage. Before the procedure we discuss anaesthesia and sedation options and provide written pre-operative and post-operative instructions.
